Description

Independent Spelling Stars from foundation works beautifully in conjunction with:

Jolly Phonics, Multi-lit, Initialit, Sound Write, Independent Spelling Stars adds to them all by teaching the Oxford/magic 200 words lists in a developmental sequence.

Independent Spelling for life covers:

  • Instruction in phonemic awareness
  • phonics
  • word  attack skills – letter sound relationships & strategies
  • words in a development sequence (WTW as the tool)
  • words in context – comprehension (meaning and grammar) – fluency
  • reading

By the end of the four day course teachers will:

  • understand the difference between spelling and reading
  • understand the developmental stages of spelling
  • understand which phonograms are needed for each stage
  • know the sounds of the 75 phonograms and when the sounds are made for spelling and reading
  • understand the 45 spelling strategies and which strategies are used in each stage
  • understand the parts of speech
  • be competent in taking a guided spelling lesson
  • understand how to do a running record for spelling
  • be able to look at a spelling mistake, know why and how to help

 

This is a multi-sensory program and uses a guided spelling session to teach and assess.

  • A student will hear the sound or word
  • Say the sound or word
  • Understand what the word means
  • Write the word, with an understanding of which letters are needed to write the word
  • Read the word, by its self and in context
  • Use colour, songs, and rhymes

The teacher will need to be:

  • Prepared, preparation is the key to making this work
  • Teach in a fast paced and dynamic manner
  • Have constant active, interactive dialogue with the student
  • 15 -20 times per 20 minute session
  • Required to do teacher modelling 
  •  I do, we do, you do, we read
  • Focused teaching of the sounds in a developmental sequence
  • Focused teaching of the strategies in a developmental sequence
  • Repetition for hearing, speech, understanding, reading
  • Every day the letters are dictated
  • Every week a strategy is taught and revised daily
  • Vocabulary and comprehension
  • Place the word in a sentence –
  • What does the word mean?
  • What part of speech can the word be used as?

  • The difference between spelling and reading
  • The stages of development
  • The first 30 phonograms
  • The first ten strategies
  • Grammar
  • The guided spelling session
  • The first 3 units, 30 words

Day 2

  • Revision of the first 30 phonograms
  • learning phonograms 31 -55
  • Revision of the first ten strategies
  • Revision of the strategies, learning strategies 11-20
  • Teaching units 4-8
  • modelling with students
  • True high frequency words
  • assessment – Q &A

Day 3

  • Revision of the first 55 phonograms
  • learning phonograms 56  – 75
  • Revision of the first 20 strategies
  • learning strategies 21 -30
  • Testing, where to now
  • Units 14-20
  • modelling with students
  • assessment              Q & A

Day 4

  • Revision of all the phonograms
  • Revision of the first 30 strategies for spelling and reading
  • modelling with students
  • assessment
